Materials that We Recommend

The materials used in making prescription eyeglasses vary based on the power and its purpose. For example, prescription lenses for sunglasses are available only in certain types of materials while clear and photochromic lenses will be available in almost all materials. We choose to dispense lenses only from tried and tested companies; those that spend significantly on research and design, keeping the end wearer in mind. Corrective eyeglasses are important and compromise will not help your vision leading to other problems.

What are Columbia Resin 39 or CR-39 lenses?

CR-39, or allyl diglycol carbonate (ADC), is a plastic polymer commonly used in the manufacture of eyeglass lenses. The abbreviation stands for "Columbia Resin #39", which was the 39th formula of a thermosetting plastic developed by the Columbia Resins project in 1940. Source : Wikipedia

CR-39 material is used to manufacture lenses with indices of 1.50 and 1.56. This material is best suited for low powered prescription lenses. CR-39 is not as strong as MR or Polycarbonate lenses, but visual clarity is much better than polycarbonate lenses.

Companies that use this material are Carl Zeiss, Nikon, Nova, Rodenstock and Essilor.

What are Mitsui Resin or MR lenses?

MR™ lens materials are made from thiourethane resin, a material that provides great lens properties. These lenses provide numerous characteristics, among them clarity, safety, durability, and refractive index. They are available in high indices such as 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 and are the most widely sought after lenses in the world. They are best suited for prescriptions that have high powers.

Companies that use this material are Carl Zeiss, Nikon, Nova, Rodenstock and Essilor.

It’s made of an exceptionally clear, lightweight lens material, which finally translates into excellent all-day wearing comfort. What are Glass lenses?

Glass lenses are the earliest material used in correcting vision problems. However the limitations with glass is its weight and ease in breakage putting the eye at great risk. As such materials evolved over time to create a blend of glass and resin in order to use the best properties of both materials. You will find such blends in the lenses provided by Maui Jim sunglasses.

Glass provides great optical clarity; the best when compared to other substitutes available in the market. Today, glass is used rarely and most companies have stopped using it as the base for optical lens production.

Companies that still continue to manufacture glass lenses are Rodenstock, Vision Rx, Maui Jim(blended) and Ray-Ban.
